During extensive renovations to The Hub at Macquarie University, a temporary common area was created to cater to the needs of students and staff alike. Comprising numerous food vendors, places to socialise and relax (and of course, a bar) the Campus Common still required significant construction and during this time students would lose access to one of the largest outdoor green spaces on the campus. D&O was commissioned to create a series of hoarding, banner and social media designs that needed to perform a number of functions: pique the interest of passers by, represent all the services the common would offer, encourage conversations via social media and create a sense of excitement about the temporary common — no mean feat when you’re demolishing the entire social hub of the campus while simultaneously replacing a large area of green space with a bunch of shipping containers! In the end, our playful illustrative approach accentuated the transient and relaxed nature of the common, managed to represent everything you could possibly find there, and also made the whole thing feel like a legitimate piece of infrastructure. Oh, and it was a pretty fun job to boot.
